Back in 80s, there were many reasons to have fun with the diesel car drivers. The diesel engines were loud and weak. They were also famous with their poor reliability at cold and wet conditions. It wasn’t a surprise to see a diesel car stopped in a puddle just because some water touched the engine. But nowadays diesel engines are being built with the highest technology and at some parts they are better than the petroleum engines. Not to mention TDI powered Audi winning many Endurance Series races including the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans for many years. Many car manufacturers produce diesel cars but none of them are as famous as the Volkswagen Group’s TDIs. We all know that Jetta is the sedan version of the Golf but VW has not changed the look of Jetta as they did with the Golf VI. 2010 Jetta uses the Golf VI platform which also hosts Audi A3. The 2010 Jetta looks the same as the 2009 Jetta. There are still rumors that they might change it in 2012 but nothing is confirmed yet. There are some differences in the color choices but it really does not make a huge impression. In the U.S., white gold can now be chosen as the color of the car but the laser blue color is not available any more. The TDI engine is very quiet with the help of the common Rail technology. The turbo usually kicks in after 2500-3000rpm in Volkswagen cars. So if you don’t drive aggressively, Jetta TDI is a very economical car. But if you need to overtake a truck or climb a hill, just hit the accelerator and the diesel engine with the turbo will show its power. 1.6 liter 105 hp engine is only available in some countries. The TDIs in the U.S. come with the 2.0 liter 140hp engine as in the U.K. they come with the 2.0 liter 170 hp engine. They both provide enormous torque. According to the factory specs, the 2.0 liter 140 hp TDI offers 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. The interior is almost the same as the 2009 Jetta but there are some differences. The biggest change is in the leather wrapped multi functional steering wheel. The instrument cluster has been changed too but it is not very different from the previous one. The Jetta that I tested had Alcantara seats which look very nice with its black color but on the other side, gray seats are not available anymore. The radio in the 2009 Jetta has also been changed with the touch screen RCD-510. The quality of the interior and exterior is high. You definitely feel that you driving a European car. ASR, ESP, EBA, HBA, ABS, Disc brakes, six airbags and TPMS are the standard safety features of the 2010 Jetta. VW Jetta received 4 stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for frontal impact and 5 stars for side impact. It also handles the road better than the Golf and any other VW model. 2010 TDI base model is priced at $22,600. There are some cars in the same class which are cheaper but none of them are as elegant as the Jetta. If you are looking for a roomy, fuel efficient, reliable (whoever says Volkswagen cars are not reliable, I bet they drive the car like a tractor), powerful and a safe car for your family; VW Jetta is a good option.
